THE
DERBYSHIRE
DETECTIVE
BY PETER YATES
Detective Inspector Neil Webster thought he’d seen it all. Twenty five years of dealing with the lowest forms of criminal life in Manchester was to thank for that. Now he’s surrounded by wild moorland, farmers, hikers and… sheep?
He never imagined a single gunshot fired in the hills would lead to a case the likes of which he’d never experienced before.
Mystery ensues deep in rural Derbyshire. With limited resources, it’s back to good old fashioned detective work. But will that be enough to solve a crime that has more questions than answers.

About Peter
I’ve always enjoyed creative writing and had published over the years many play scripts, songs, poems, even cartoons – but in 2025, I decided to embark on my first book, not just to see if I could actually write a novel, but one that readers would really enjoy. To see if I was on the right track, I only completed the first two chapters before sending it to a publisher, an approach totally at odds with what the experts say. That publisher was Spiral Books, and on April 15th this year ‘The Derbyshire Detective’ had its official launch. The photograph below from a Waterstones shop manager showing it displayed next to Richard Osman’s ‘We Solve Murders’ was the icing on the cake for me.
The story itself is set deep in the Derbyshire Peak District so, if you’re a fan of that part of the world or simply an enthusiast of ‘cozy crime’, hopefully both, then this might be just the book for you. I hope so.
Cheers
Peter
Reviews
"Set in my locality which I really enjoyed. Good interesting story without being gruesome or graphic. I hope that there will be future books." ~ May 2026
"A great read. Really good story, good pace and well written. Policing in the 1960’s.
I really liked the subtle humour and the fact that there were no gory details, violence, bad language etc. just an honest story. Look forward to another one." ~ April 2026
